How Hen Got Her Cluck

Long ago, in the days before our time, Hens did not cluck. They were the proudest group of fowls, always thinking their eggs were the smoothest and the biggest ever. One day, they discovered that this was not so. Hen had just laid an egg. And she was so very proud of it! "Come and see my egg!" Hen called out to Goat. "Isn’t my egg beautiful? It’s the smoothest and biggest egg ever!" exclaimed Hen. "It’s not that big," said Goat. "I have seen bigger eggs. In fact, Duck’s egg is bigger than yours!" "Bigger than MINE?" exclaimed Hen. "Well, I’ll just have to see it for myself." So off Hen went to look for Duck.

"Hello, Duck!" called Hen. "I heard that your egg was bigger than mine. Can I please see it? "Sure!" said Duck, showing Hen her egg. "Wow! It’s the smoothest and biggest egg I ever saw!" exclaimed Hen. "It’s not that big," said Duck. "I have seen bigger eggs. In fact, Goose’s egg is bigger than mine!" "Bigger than YOURS?" exclaimed Hen. "Well, I’ll just have to see it for myself!" So off Hen went to look for Goose.

"Hello, Goose!" called Hen. "I heard that your egg was bigger than Duck’s. Can I please see it? "Of course!" said Goose, showing Hen her egg. "Wow! It’s the smoothest and biggest egg I ever saw!" exclaimed Hen. "It’s not that big," said Goose. "I have seen bigger eggs. In fact, Turkey’s egg is bigger than mine!" "Bigger than YOURS?" exclaimed Hen. "Well, I’ll just have to see it for myself!" So off Hen went to look for Turkey.

"Hello, Turkey!" called Hen. "I heard that your egg was bigger than mine. Can I please see it? "Certainly!" said Turkey, showing Hen her egg. "Wow! It’s the smoothest and biggest egg I ever saw!" exclaimed Hen. "It’s not that big," said Turkey. "I have seen bigger eggs. In fact, Ostrich’s egg is the BIGGEST egg that I have ever seen!" "Bigger than all of ours?" Hen gasped. "Well, I must see it for myself." So off Hen went to look for Ostrich.

"Hello, Ostrich!" called Hen. "I heard that your egg was the biggest egg ever! Can I please see it? "But of course!" said Ostrich, showing Hen her egg. "Oh wow! It’s the smoothest and biggest egg I have EVER seen!" exclaimed Hen. "Now it does seem that my egg is the smallest egg of all," sighed Hen sadly.

Still, Hen hoped that one day, her eggs would grow to be the smoothest and biggest of them all. From that day on, whenever Hen laid eggs, she is in fact clucking, "Big, big, big, BIG-GER! Big, big, big, BIG-GER!" So this, my friends, is how Hen got her cluck!
