As the sun dipped low, painting the sky in fiery oranges, the old sheepdog, Whistle, felt a shiver of unease. A small, fluffy lamb was missing from the flock, having strayed too far.

He followed the faint scent of tiny hooves toward the edge of the dark, tangled woods, a place the sheep never dared to enter. Heavy clouds began to gather, hinting at a coming storm.

Deep inside, a sudden, strong gust of wind swirled the fallen leaves, scattering the lamb's scent and confusing Whistle. He barked, a worried sound, but only the distant rumble of thunder answered him.

Pushing deeper, his old paws aching, Whistle heard a tiny, distressed squeak. It wasn't the lamb, but a tiny, lost squirrel tangled in a thorny bramble bush.

Just as the first drops of rain began to pelter the forest floor, Whistle spotted a small, white patch huddled beneath the protective branches of an ancient, gnarled oak tree. The lamb was shivering, but finally found.

With gentle nudges, Whistle guided the lamb out of the darkening woods, shielding it from the pelting rain and leading it safely back to the warmth and comfort of the anxious flock. His job was done.
True responsibility means seeing a difficult task through with courage and persistence, especially when it helps others.
What caused Whistle to become confused about the lamb's scent inside the woods?
